Todays ramblings
Good Morning.

Good Morning [[firstname]].

Just thought I would remind you that tomorrow morning will be the last tips from me until the new year.

Carrying on from Yesterday

Have you noticed how strange the prices on the lay side are on the Greyhounds?

Sometimes the SP is 6/1 but we get a match lower other times we get know way near the SP, it just goes to show how frantic and strange the last 60 seconds can be.

Well even though the SP's yesterday show a different story we still got matched on the 1st 3 selections and won on all of them, luckily as it got a little dodgy later on. It shows again that it is better to get in and out as quick as you can.

I did get an email from someone suggesting using a 2 race scratch back on a continuous run and although it is interesting and if you have a large enough bank could work out better, I still don't like the idea of keep going because I am afraid Howard's warnings will catch you out sooner or later.

Here are today's settings, which are the same as yesterday because I just want a little more in the bank (I lost again at football last night) before we start on staking again.

Stake 2.00
Stop Win: 2.00 x 3 = 6.00 (take it down to 5.57)
Stop Loss: 2.00 x 25 = 50.00
running loss - 51.00

Screen shot of option settings.

Bots what are they?

I have had quite a few emails asking for more informations about bots and how they are used, so I thought I would try to come up with a laymen's guide, although it will be over several emails.

As most of you will know my company Sporting Bots Limited specialises in creating what I like to class as "useful bots". These are bots that are user driven rather than design driven, which means they are created out of a direct need and normally specific to a certain way of betting.

So to explain what all this means I thought I would go back to my first idea for the original Greyhound bot and the thinking behind it.

I had been spending quite a bit of time betting on the favourite of each Greyhound race as long as it was between a certain price, using a similar "Scratch Back" staking system as we are using for the Greyhound System (3).

I was having one major problem and that was time. As you will probably know, greyhound races are normally 10 minutes apart, and the favourite can only really be determined in the last 60 seconds of a race. So because of going out, answering the phone, even just answering an email I kept missing races.

So my first thing was to build what I called the Greyhound Timer, at least then I could set it to sound an alarm before each race that I was interested in, which helped as long as I remembered to set it!

I decided this was no good, I had to find a better way, so I contracted a programmer to write some software that would meet my needs.

I will tell you that this is not as easy as it sounds and finding a good programmer was not easy or cheap, this is what we call a bespoke application (made for one purpose) and that word always "rings the till".

So first of all a Bot or the Greyhound Bot in this case, is just a software application, but it's difference is that it is actually talking to another piece of software called an API in this case Betfair's API.

So let's cover Betfair's API first, what is it and why is it so important?

Application Programming Interface (API) is a set of tools that allow you to interface securely (and I must emphasize securely) with Betfair's database. When we link to the API is over what we call a HTTPS secure direct link which is even a little technical for me!

Although betfair has lots of nice (on not so nice depending on your point of view) screens that you can look at when you are browsing, you are just looking at information that is held in a giant database and it is the API that links between what you see on screen and what is in the database.

Paying betfair a nice little chunk every month allows me to have access to the API and use software to query it's contents for certain information.

In the case of the Greyhound bot we would send a call to the API to give us all the Greyhound races for the day, including the time and course, this is fed back to the bot is the form of race ID's, which the bot can keep a list of.

So when you are select the races for the Greyhound bot to watch it just calls the API and says give me all the race information for these race ID's.

The Greyhound bot can ask for lot's of information through the API and that is why we ended up expanding and making it in to the Grey Horse bot so it's overall usefulness was enhanced.

The API allows us to get the list of runners, current prices and to place bets, but it is the internal workings of our software that takes this information and manipulates so that automatic betting and staking can occur.

More tomorrow.

8. Greyhound Selections- Lay System started 07/11/2006.

After playing around with selections I have decided that for the time being this is going to be a lay only test. I think I have worked out a system that will give us quite good prices but I suspect there will have to be a maximum lay price set. I am just not sure what that will be but I am testing between 2.00 and 7.00. I will make every effort to record betfair lay prices as well. The ones marked with an asterisks (*) are from the original and tighter system.
You can see all the results since the 14th (when I introduced the latest selection method) here. I am now using what I call the "rule of 3", this means we go for 3 wins and use a 3 race scratch back to get back any losses.
